Soba Yoshi @ Bayan Lepas, Penang

This was reputed to be one of the better Japanese restaurants in Penang.  This may be so, as when we walked in, there were a few Japanese diners there, usually a sure sign that the place is quite authentic and reasonably good.

We were kinda rushed for time, so we ordered some set meals.

The shashimi set comprises of the usual and expected items, the rice, the fruit desert (what is it with Japanese restaurants, they almost always serve watermelon), miso soup and some pickles.  The difference I can see is that the shashimi were quite thickly cut, unlike some of the other places I have been to.

I had a mix of various varieties, which included mackerel (this was one of the best mackerel I had, other than the one behind the old subang airport), chicken teri-yaki, rice and some salad.  It was a very filing and satisfying lunch.  Together with the meal came the chawamushi (really, don’t know how to spell it).

The appetizer was a mix that included sliced fish cakes (hmmm, not sure but it is kinda weird).

Overall, I can’t really comment too much about it other than I did enjoy my lunch and felt that the price was affordable for the quality.
